It's a great and true story, though I'm sure Hollywood took some license. If anything these films tend to show is how much people sacrificed during World War 2 in both the military and at home, whereas today people don't have the same relationship with "war."

Pardon the pun, but this film was a "great vehicle" for Sidney Poitier as Cpl. Andrew Robertson.
