It's a very curious thing to watch a praying mantis move. They are very mechanical and methodical in their movement.One late night, I was doing my evening fast walking up a hill when I came upon a praying mantis just parked on the street next to a car tire. One second I'm walking up this steep hill, then I'm scared witless by the site of a 4 or 5 inch long insect just "standing there" ... "praying." I instantly jumped sideways to avoid stepping on it. And yes, they do fly though this one just stood their while I made 2 rounds walking around this circular block. Then it either flew away or disappeared I know not where.Scared the heck out of me. Harmless, yes. But scary for sure.

I never knew praying mantids sound like elephants, especially wounded elephants. Seems to me a lot of critters and creatures sounded like elephants in these old scary films.

Considering that a mantis eats its food, insects and other critters that it can grab, alive, it would have been an extremely horrific and ghastly death for those people it ate. Munching away on them a little bit at a time while they were still alive.
